Owls Inspire Year 2 at St Peter's
Sparrows Class at St Peter’s Primary School, Harrogate soared to new heights in their learning this week, embracing the school’s vision to Love, Learn, Shine through an unforgettable encounter with owls.
As part of their English curriculum, pupils have been reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, a story that celebrates courage and curiosity - two qualities that help children shine every day. To bring this theme to life, the class welcomed experts from the Harrogate Birds of Prey Centre, who introduced them to the fascinating world of owls.
During the visit, pupils discovered incredible facts about these majestic birds, including how eye colour reveals their hunting habits: owls with yellow eyes hunt during the day, while those with orange eyes are nocturnal. They also learned how feather colours provide camouflage and explored the five species of owls native to the UK: Tawny Owl, Long-Eared Owl, Barn Owl, Short-Eared Owl, and Little Owl.
The highlight of the day was meeting two stunning owls - Luna and Puck. Some pupils even had the chance to handle the birds, creating a magical moment that sparked wonder and respect for wildlife.
One Year Two pupil shared their excitement: “Holding Luna was amazing! I never knew owls could be so soft and calm. I can’t wait to write my fact file!”
In a world where screens dominate our everyday lives, this hands-on experience will inspire pupils as they create detailed owl fact files in their English lessons, demonstrating how they Love the natural world, Learn through real-life experiences, and Shine by sharing their knowledge creatively.
